Who:

This pilot workshop is for white, racialized and Indigenous people who in their paid and volunteer work are trying to address racism and the largely unconscious ways in which white privilege is maintained and perpetuated in the workplace. For anyone looking to create and advance inclusion in their organization, this session will offer you theoretical frameworks, develop self-understanding, and offer you ways of encouraging the necessary but tough conversations about race.

What:

We’re at a critical juncture in the fight for racial justice. As racialized and Indigenous people organize for their rights, many white people who are potential allies, too easily feel defensive and uncomfortable. Instead of finding ways to ally themselves in the work of Black Lives Matter and Indigenous sovereignty struggles, they can end up inadvertently undermining the very efforts they want to support.

In this course, we will be working together to identify what commonly happens when the targets of racism speak back and organize, and to explore how these common reactions can, in fact, reinforce white privilege, intentionally or not. We want to give each other support to practise approaches that interrupt expressions of white privilege – our own and other people’s – and to develop our muscles to stay in the discomfort that this can produce.

We will be working with tools we’ve developed from Robin DiAngelo’s writing on “White Fragility”. We’ve found her work helpful in recognizing some of the conscious and unconscious defenses of white privilege, and in analysing the negative impact of such expressions on the struggle for racial justice.

At the end of this workshop, we hope participants will:

  • Recognize expressions of white privilege (in ourselves and others);
  • Recognize some of the ways that workplace systems maintain a dominant culture of whiteness’
  • Practise noticing and compassionately interrupting expressions of white privilege in ourselves and others;
  • Strengthen our stamina to be effective allies for racial justice.

This is a pilot 1-day workshop where your feedback will be critical to our learning and improving this work. We welcome all racialized and Indigenous friends to attend as white privilege impacts all of us.

Barb is a social justice facilitator, writer and activist in Toronto. She is the co-author with Tina Lopez of the award-wining book, Dancing on Live Embers: Challenging Racism in Organizations (2006)

Kai is a social justice activist and on staff in the Education and Equality Department in the Canadian National Office of the United Steelworkers.
adrianeAdriane Paavo
Adriane is a labour educator, currently working for the United Steelworkers, and continues to learn about her implication in white privilege.
