Oftentimes, we get promoted to management positions without a lot of training or support. This course is a dive into management foundations starting with learning to manage ourselves in order to manage, and bring out the best, in others.  Using positional power constructively to create environments where clarity, communication and creativity can flourish looks effortless but takes a lot of leadership effort and discipline.

We will explore how to create trusting relationships as the foundation of teamwork, how to engage and get buy-in from team members, how to manage time in service of organizational vision,  understand what happens to ourselves in stressful situations and how to manage power, and how to give timely and constructive feedback to employees.

You will:

  • Learn about Emotional Intelligence as the heart of effective management;
  • Learn about how to frame organizational changes in a way that engages and creates buy-in;
  • Look at personal triggers and how to manage yourself in tough situations;
  • Explore strategies to maximize team efforts in service of organizational mission: time-mgt, goal-setting and delegating;
  • Explore team success factors and the healthy and positive use of power;
  • Learn a simple framework to give timely and positive feedback to employees.

Four online modules each include a video lecture component, interactive webinar and course handouts. You will be asked to complete an end-of-course assessment to receive your course badge. The four online modules include:

  1. Managing Self to Tell the Story
    Good managers need to know how to manage their own responses in order to set the tone and frame things in the right way to engage others.
  2. Performance Feedback and Team Management
    Knowing how to give timely and effective feedback on performance to allow for employee satisfaction and growth is a foundational management skill.  This session we will practice giving feedback using a combination of inner regulation and communication clarity. 
  3. Conscious Use of Power
    Most team conflicts arise from the unconscious use of power through behaviours such as favouritism, gossip and avoidance of conflict. This session will look at positional power (as well as other forms including identity) to understand how to use power well to create a more cohesive and inclusive team.
  4. Time Management and Receiving Feedback
    Learning how to manage our own time is central to good leadership, especially the time to reflect and strategize how to achieve our team’s high-level vision. So is receiving input and feedback from our employees and colleagues.  This session will practice the art of asking for, and receiving feedback skillfully.
Management Certificate Program Modules

The in-person course is offered as a two-day intensive including direct feedback and coaching from group facilitator; a full course manual (theory, exercises, reflection); snacks and beverages; all in a pleasurable and accessible location.

Day One Managing Self
Leaders set the tone, and each of us has a unique leadership style- identifying our personal strengths as well struggles- is at the heart of what it means to lead. Good managers can pro-actively harness their strengths while managing their weaknesses and blindspots. We will explore topics starting with self-awareness and personal mastery, move into the art of engaging others and finish with frameworks for time-management, goal-setting and delegating to others.

Day Two Managing Teams
Managers need to develop comfort in working with challenging behaviours among team members. Often difficult people within organizations can result in co-workers shutting down, endless cycles of conflict, lost productivity as well as significant emotional drain for all involved. If harnessed properly, there is a power in conflict situations to transform and deepen relationships, increasing feelings of team trust and inclusion. Day Two goes more deeply into personal conflict styles and triggers, the art of concise and clear feedback to employees, and strategies to dealing with difficult situations.

Leadership Certificate Program Modules

This course is part of the Anima Inclusive Leadership Certificate. When you complete all four in-person certificate courses you will receive a printed gold-embossed certificate recognizing leadership mastery in the areas of facilitation, diversity, management and conflict.
