Authentic Facilitation: Guiding Groups with Presence and Ease

Powerful facilitation is all about finding your own unique style and being yourself in front of a group, thereby encouraging others to authentically bring forward all of what they have to offer. At its core, it is about being deeply present. Each group, each situation calls for something different and the best facilitators know how to listen for, and serve this emerging truth.
We will explore how to create a comfortable learning environment, practice foundational facilitation skills in the three key areas of process, content and logistics and then look at what to do in the face of group conflict.
- Learn about Emotional Intelligence and Deep Listening as the heart of effective facilitation;
- Learn about the three key hats of facilitation: process, content and logistics
- Learn about self-regulation, tone-setting and creating an effective and inclusive learning container;
- Identify personal triggers in group conflict situations and practice de-escalation techniques;
- Learn about group stages and healthy approaches to work with group conflict.
Four online modules each include a video lecture component, interactive webinar and course handouts. You will be asked to complete an end-of-course assessment to receive your course badge. The four online modules include:
- Cultivating Presence: Reading the Room
The heart of facilitation is emotional intelligence and the deep listening ability to read what is happening in the room at both informational and feeling levels.
- Tips, Techniques and Trying
How to set up a group container with practice facilitating a small group session.
- Triggers and Self-Management
How to notice what is happening within ourselves so we can manage it, as the facilitator always sets the tone. We will identify our triggers and practice with them.
- Naming and Framing
How we step into tense or challenging moments in a group is where the real art of facilitation sits. This week introduces a basic facilitator move in conflictual moments and how this applies in practice.
This course is part of the Anima Inclusive Management Online Certificate. The in-person course is offered as a two-day intensive including direct feedback and coaching from group facilitator; a full course manual (theory, exercises, reflection); snacks and beverages; all in a pleasurable and accessible location.
Day One is a dive into foundational facilitation skills, tips and best practices grounded in a theoretical framework pulling from fields of neuroscience, group psychology, systems change and equity. Topics explored include being present, directing group energy, handling group differences, and how to let the process unfold without controlling it. Group learning styles and process theory, emotional intelligence research and mindfulness techniques are also covered. Day One is all about learning to facilitate with presence and ease, accessing all of ourselves in the role.
Day Two addresses what to do when differences emerge in groups leading to conflictual situations. Many of us tend to contract, to take one side over another, to want to control or direct group response when this happens. How do we stay open to the transformational learning possible, to stay on the side of the whole? We start with our own conflict triggers then move into different frameworks and techniques for anticipating, analyzing and dealing with conflict.
As well, we’ll more deeply explore levels of awareness: on a cognitive level, being aware of various viewpoints on an issue and also differences in power, privilege and rank in a group; on an emotional level, being able to track what people are feeling and needing; and on an essence level, being able to sense what the emerging truth is that will allow for transformation and growth. Allowing group intelligence to emerge depends on our ability as facilitators to sit in the fire of conflict.
This course is part of the Anima Inclusive Leadership Certificate. When you complete all four in-person certificate courses you will receive a printed gold-embossed certificate recognizing leadership mastery in the areas of facilitation, diversity, management and conflict.
