Deep Diversity – Creating Inclusive Organizations

For any organization that wants to stay relevant and productive, creating a functionally diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace is a must. Understanding how systemic discrimination threatens fairness and morale in both overt and subtle ways is critical to such initiatives.   • Leadership competencies for diversity champions with a focus on emotional literacy including skill development in self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and relationship management;
  • How to apply the Deep Diversity® framework to help uncover systemic discrimination patterns within organizations with regards to race/ethnicity specifically, and social identity broadly;
  • How unconscious bias results in mistreatment of people of minority groups in organizations and the importance of developing bias detection and reduction skills;
  • What gets in the way of establishing a diverse organization that is inclusive of, and equitable for, all people regardless of identity or background;
  • Where your organization is at and where it wants to go using the unique measurement tool: the Deep Diversity® Inclusive Workplace Continuum: Organizational Practices

Authentic Management – Leading Diverse, High Performance Teams

Dive into management essentials critical to nurturing diverse, high-performing teams including psychological safety, performance feedback, power awareness, time-management as well as general smart practices for leaders.

Become a manager of choice by learning to use awareness and positional power to nurture diverse, high-performing environments where clarity, communication and creativity flourish for all employees regardless of identity or background. Explore how to create trusting relationships as the foundation of teamwork, engage and get buy-in from diverse team members and interrupt subtle forms of discrimination to create an equitable environment.

  • Strategies for developing emotional intelligence for the workplace including awareness of the “emotional tax” on BIPOC employees;

  • The Dos of good management practice and the Don’ts;
  • Strategies to maximize team efforts in service of organizational mission: time-management, goal-setting and delegating;
  • How to use power well—avoiding its overuse or underuse—in order to be an effective, inclusive and equitable leader.

Brave Conversations – Transforming Workplace Conflict

Develop conflict competence in order to transform disagreements and differences into opportunities for learning and growth, especially regarding race and identity issues.

Leaders working in increasingly diverse teams and organizations need to develop conflict competence skills, especially around race and identity issues. This course will explore your own identity as a leader and how it can both help and hinder your relationships, how to listen deeply for what happens under the surface of words and behaviour, and how to interrupt and transform difficult situations into learning opportunities.

You will learn:

  • To explore what is a “brave” conversation and underlying principles to transform conflict, including discussions about race and identity;
  • To identify your conflict triggers and identify healthy recovery skills, including about race and identity;
  • To uncover the hidden feelings and needs that often underlie conflict situations through listening deeply and asking wise questions using scenarios as well as real-time professional issues;
  • To develop awareness of signals that conflict is escalating or de-escalating in inter-personal and team situations.    
  • To uncover awareness of your own and other social identities when disagreements and conflict emerge
  • How to prepare emotionally and strategically for a brave conversation (as well as decide if it is the right step to take in the first place!)

Authentic Facilitation – Guiding Groups with Presence and Ease

Learn how to facilitate inclusive meetings and group conversations where everybody—regardless of rank, background or identity— can participate and feel supported.

Learning how to facilitate group conversations, meetings and events where everyone feels able to participate is crucial to creating inclusive, high functioning teams and organizations. This course will teach you facilitation tips around process, content and logistics, as well as how to navigate differences of identity and rank which can escalate if left untended.

You will learn:

  • Key skills of self-regulation, tone-setting and how to create effective and inclusive learning environments;
  • Best practices in the areas of group process, facilitating content and managing logistics;
  • Personal triggers in group conflict situations and how to use de-escalation techniques effectively;
  • Techniques around common facilitation challenges before, during and after a facilitated group process;
  • To “name and frame” what is happening in real time including naming “hot spot” moments that arise in group situations, especially regarding issues of race and identity.

Racial Literacy Courses and Coaching

Decoding Race for White Leaders – Creating Cultures of Belonging

As a white leader, move past discomfort into racial literacy and active ally-ship to promote strong relationships and cultures of belonging.

This course is designed to look at whiteness as a system of power, and to help white leaders investigate their own racial identity with the attendant unspoken assumptions and behaviours brought into the workplace. You will be guided to lead from a place of self-awareness around race, recognizing the importance of taking an intersectional approach to identity, while also being able to step into your power in constructive ways that promote relationship building and create authentic cultures of belonging.

You will learn:

  • To understand patterns of whiteness and how it plays out in the workplace, including microaggressions, fragility, and privilege;
  • To identify your own emotional reactions when dealing with difficult conversations about race – and how to be more skillful in having these conversations;
  • How to step into power in equitable and transparent ways;
  • Some common mistakes that white leaders make and explore ways to address those mistakes;
  • Where feedback often goes wrong, and practice giving feedback to employees based on performance, not based on bias;
  • How to strengthen your own leadership through feedback on difficult challenges and moments you struggle with as a white leader.

White Leader Lab – A Community of Practice

A Community of Practice

Join other white leaders in a year-long program of learning, unlearning and collaborative reflection to move into more inclusive and authentic leadership.

For our systems to thrive in the twenty-first century, we need educated, racially literate leaders who have the tools to cultivate equitable environments and professional standards. This community of practice is designed to help a small cohort of up to twenty-five white leaders develop fluency in equity, diversity, and inclusion. Through monthly sessions, you will learn to move from  “I don’t see colour” to “I understand how racism has impacted my own leadership and organization and I have strategies to assist in its undoing”.

You will learn:

  • How whiteness norms are unconsciously perpetuated in organizational contexts;
  • How to explore and decode whiteness as a racial category versus white cultural norms;
  • What it takes to develop equity literacy and develop your fluency in a community of like-minded peers;
  • To move beyond enacting traditional racial scripts to authentic relationship-building;
  • How to access equity in your team/program area/organization and how to take steps forward from diversity to inclusion to belonging.

Online Community of Practice

Format: Ten online sessions plus additional resources
