The Brown Book:
Using Storytelling to Combat Racism

The Brown Book project is an award-winning1 anti-discrimination program that uses storytelling as a tool to combat racism. This unique workshop is powerful because it uses theory and experiential activities to engage both students as well as teachers in a provocative learning process. In this workshop (half-day or full-day option), participants will:

  • Use personal stories from South Asian and Muslim youth as a springboard for discussion about stereotypes, racism, and other forms of systemic discrimination;
  • Examine key anti-bias theory necessary to help us distinguish between subtle versus overt forms of racism and uncover the powerful role of implicit bias in maintaining inequities;
  • Explore inspiring and real-life stories of young people who are working to improve their communities both locally and globally using the award-winning book called, “The Brown Book: Voices of Young Pakistani & Muslim Activists from Toronto and Lahore.”

For schedule of all upcoming Anima programs.

  • 1 The Brown Book Project was honoured with the Anti-Bias Curriculum Development Award in 2002 by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.

Excellent speaker...very well versed on the subject... Shakil was sensitive to people’s comments and very thought provoking.

I can’t believe you had my attention for 3 hours! You brought a lot to my attention that I didn’t think about before.

I considered myself very open-minded, but my eyes were opened today – thanks!
