Anima Leadership

Diversity and Equity Leadership Institute

The first week-long residential Diversity and Equity Leadership Institute was offered in July 2009, in partnership with the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. Drawing leaders from non-profit organizations, police, health care and schools, this program shifted for many their understanding and approach to diversity and equity work.

The DELI strengthens traditional approaches to anti-racism and inclusion with research from the fields of emotional intelligence, social psychology, bias research, conflict transformation and mindfulness practice. The DELI marks a paradigm shift in working through issues of racism and difference, offered in an experiential, holistic learning process. It's essence is that for anti-racism / diversity programs to be deeply effective, they must address the unconscious, emotional terrain that underlies the learner's experience-- not just the intellectual level. Most people do not intend to discriminate, but as a result of our brain's wiring, we are all susceptible to operating from personal and organizational 'blind spots'.

This program takes people on both an individual and collective journey of learning what it means to build relationships across difference and create truly inclusive organizational environments. In the words of Trevor Gladue, a participant from the Alberta Centre for Race and Culture, "Anima will take you on the longest journey of your life... from your head to your heart."
